Dagala Trek in Bhutan
Embark on the 5-day Dagala trek in Bhutan, commencing near Thimphu and leading to a multitude of breathtaking high-altitude glacial lakes. While the trek features generally easy terrain, some days involve challenging steep climbs. The journey begins at Khoma (near Thimphu) and concludes in Chamgang, Thimphu. On clear winter and spring days, the panoramic views may extend to Mt. Kanchenjunga in India. With a maximum altitude of 4300 m, the trek’s difficulty level is moderate, covering a total distance of 41 km.

Comprehensive Schedule for the DagalaTrek.
Upon arrival at Paro airport, your guide will receive you and transfer to the hotel.
Afternoon, visit to Ta dzong built in 1656 which now houses the national museum of Bhutan.
Then visit Rinpung dzong built in 1646 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal.
In the evening, visit to a Bhutanese farmhouse.
Dinner and overnight in hotel.
In the morning, embark on a brief drive to Satsam Chorten, followed by a 2-hour hike to reach the Paro Taktsang Monastery.
- The main temple, constructed in 1684 by Gyaltse Tenzin Rabgay, is built around Guru Rinpoche’s meditation cave. Legend holds that Guru Rinpoche, the tantric mystic, arrived here on the back of a flying tigress named Dorji Drolo. This trail is also part of the picturesque Bumdra trek.
During the afternoon, visit Drugyal Dzong, established in 1647 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. Later, explore Kichu Lhakhang, a sacred site built in 659 A.D by the Tibetan King Srongtsen Gampo.
In the evening, wander through Paro town.

In the morning, embark on a 1 ½-hour drive to Geynikha. Along the way, catch a glimpse of the 15th-century Tamchog Monastery, crafted by Thang Tong Gyalpo.
Continuing our journey, we proceed to Genekha, passing through the charming villages of Bama and Chizhi. Upon reaching Gyenekha, we traverse the village of Tsochekha.
After a satisfying lunch, undertake a hike to Gur, crossing a suspension bridge while meandering through an oak forest renowned for its mushrooms.
Conclude the day with dinner and an overnight stay at the camp.

We traverse a pass at an elevation of 4240 m, providing a breathtaking view of the spectacular Dagala Village. Along the way, we journey through various herders’ camps, eventually reaching the base of the expansive Labatamba valley at 4300 m, near Utso Lake. The area is dotted with numerous lakes.
Establish camp near the lake at 4300 m.
Conclude the day with dinner and an overnight stay at the camp.

The trail climbs along the western side of the lake at 4500 m, where there are good mountain views. From the pass there is a steep descent to another lake at 4350 m.
A short distance beyond the lake leads to the valley and then to Panka at 4000 m.
Dinner and overnight in camp.
Walking distance 8 km, time: 6-7 hours, ascent: 260 m, descent: 520 m.
The path takes us north, crossing a pass at an elevation of 4000 m. Subsequently, we ascend along the ridge’s side to reach a crest at 4270 m. From this vantage point, one can behold the panoramic views of the Dagala range and a distant Thimphu to the north. The journey continues with a prolonged descent through lush forests, leading to the Goemba and the village of Talakha (3080 m).

In the evening, explore the Tashichho Dzong, the seat of the national government and central monastic body.

- The world’s tallest sitting Buddha statue (51.5 meters) at Kuensel Phodrang.
- Changangkha Lhakhang, Thimphu’s oldest monastery constructed in the 13th century by Phajo Drugom Shigpo.
- Takin Preserve Center, a miniature zoo housing Takins, Bhutan’s national animal, believed to be a blend of a cow and goat.
- Sangay Gang Viewpoint, offering panoramic views of Thimphu valley below.
- Dupthop Lhakhang, one of the few surviving nunneries in Bhutan.

In the afternoon, visit the Painting School (the School of 13 Arts and Crafts).
During the evening, witness an archery match at Changlimithang.

In the morning, embark on a scenic drive to Punakha, the historical capital of Bhutan until the reign of the second king.
En route, stop at Dochula Pass (3140 m) to admire its meticulously arranged 108 Stupas.
Explore Chimi Lhakhang (The Temple of Fertility), constructed in 1499 by Lama Drukpa Kuenley, renowned as “The Divine Madman.” Lama Drukpa Kuenley traveled across Bhutan and Tibet as a Yogi, employing songs and humor to disseminate teachings of salvation through unconventional means.
In the afternoon, visit Punakha Dzong, established in 1637 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. Punakha serves as the winter residence of Je Khenpo, the chief abbot of Bhutan.
Conclude the day by returning to Thimphu.
